I’ve always been fascinated by this question and, many years ago, my employer did actually recruit sporty team players!
So, I thought I would delve into this in a bit more detail, under the following headings:
Teamwork.
Yes, there are individual sports but generally many sports involve teamwork and collaboration. Athletes who have experienced success in team sports often bring leadership and teamwork into the business environment as they understand the importance of working together.
Discipline.
Successful athletes will have been accustomed to rigorous training schedules with strict work ethics. Such qualities can be translated into the business world where discipline and hard work are essential. Included here will also be the ability to make and adhere to strategic decision-making.
Focus.
The ability to focus on objectives and achieving goals is paramount for athletes, but this is also the same in business. These transferable skills are critical for success in business.
Adaptability & Resilience.
Sporty people are used to adapting to new challenges and situations and they also develop resilience and mental toughness in adapting to setbacks and changing landscapes. In business, these qualities and the ability to pivot at pressure situations is essential.
Brand & Identity.
Many athletes have a strong public image and some also have a brand. So, in business, they understand the value of a brand and that their identity can be leveraged for marketing and networking opportunities.
All in all, the answer to my question is a definitive YES! However, as noted, some sporty people will not automatically transition into great business people as their skillset may be very individualistic. Those who do transition into exceptional business people will have a combination of all the qualities listed above.
Any other views would be appreciated and very welcome please.
